Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about IP addresses, geolocation, and online privacy.
What is my IP address right now?
Your current public IP address is shown at the top of this page and auto-detected when you load the tool. It is assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and can change when you switch networks, restart your router, or connect via VPN.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (e.g. 192.168.1.1) and supports ~4.3 billion unique addresses. IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses (e.g. 2001:db8::1) and supports virtually unlimited addresses. IPv4 is still most common, but IPv6 adoption is growing. This tool detects and shows both simultaneously.
Can websites see my IP address?
Yes. Every website you visit can see your public IP address — it is technically required for the internet to work. Your IP reveals your approximate location (city-level), ISP, and timezone, but not your exact home address or personal identity.
How do I hide or change my IP address?
You can hide or change your IP using: (1) a VPN — routes traffic through a server in another location, (2) the Tor Browser — anonymizes traffic through multiple relays, or (3) a proxy server. After connecting, refresh this tool to verify your new IP address.
How accurate is IP geolocation?
Country-level accuracy is 99%+. City-level accuracy is 70–90%. Accuracy depends on your ISP's infrastructure. VPN and mobile users may see the location of their server or cell tower. Exact street addresses cannot be determined from an IP.
Does my IP address change?
Most home connections use a dynamic IP that changes when you restart your router or when your ISP reassigns it. Business and server connections often use static IPs that never change. This tool auto-refreshes every 60 seconds to always show your current IP.
What is the difference between a public and private IP address?
A public IP is assigned by your ISP and visible on the internet — this is what this tool shows. A private IP (ranges like 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x) is assigned by your router and only visible within your local network. Websites see your public IP, not your private one.
What is an ASN (Autonomous System Number)?
An ASN (Autonomous System Number) is a unique identifier for a network on the internet — typically an ISP, large company, or university. Google is AS15169, Cloudflare is AS13335. This tool shows your ASN in the Network Details section.
Why does my IP show a different city than where I am?
IP geolocation maps your IP to the location registered by your ISP — often their regional data center rather than your exact city. Mobile networks, VPNs, and corporate connections are especially likely to show an incorrect city. Country is almost always correct; city can be off by tens to hundreds of miles.
Is this tool free and private?
Yes. This tool is 100% free with no account, no signup, and no limitations. We do not store your IP address, log your lookups, or track your usage. Geolocation is fetched directly from ip-api.com in your browser.
